The Rape of Lucrece is a contemporary, solo performance that seeks not only to present Shakespeare’s powerful text but also to create a meaningful and reflective experience for its audience. Central to this production is the intention to foster dialogue and understanding around issues of gender-based violence, using the performance as a catalyst for thoughtful discussion. At the conclusion of each performance, audience members are invited to take part in a moderated question-and-answer session and an open discussion. This space is especially important to us, as it allows the production to extend beyond the stage, transforming the theatrical experience into an opportunity for learning, engagement, and social reflection.
The post-performance discussion is facilitated by a respected NGO specialising in gender-based violence. Their involvement ensures that the conversation is conducted with both expertise and sensitivity, providing factual context and guidance for participants. This collaboration allows the audience to engage with the material in a deeper, more informed way, bridging the gap between theatrical experience and social awareness. Through this structured dialogue, the production creates a safe environment where complex and sometimes uncomfortable topics can be explored respectfully.
By combining the artistry of Shakespeare’s text with a socially conscious framework, The Rape of Lucrece encourages audiences to reflect on contemporary issues that remain urgently relevant. The moderated discussion not only enhances understanding of the play’s historical and literary significance but also invites personal reflection on the challenges and realities faced by survivors of gender-based violence today. For us, this post-show space is a vital element of the project: it embodies our commitment to using theatre as a platform for education, empathy, and community engagement. Ultimately, the project aspires to leave audiences with a lasting impression, prompting conversation and consideration far beyond the walls of the theatre.
